AQR Capital Management has proven that success can be achieved even in turbulent times, with a pair of hedge funds surpassing the S&P 500’s performance in the first half of 2025. This remarkable feat speaks not only to the astute decision-making of the firm but also to the resilience of free-market principles against the encroachment of government interference.

Under the leadership of Cliff Asness, the Apex strategy—a blend of stocks, macro, and arbitrage trades—has thrived, boasting a striking 11.4% return in the first six months of the year. This example of prudent investment showcases the importance of personal responsibility and strategic thinking in an economy riddled with inflationary pressures.

AQR’s long-short Delphi equity fund has also experienced a commendable gain of 11.6% net of fees during the same period, demonstrating that hardworking individuals can prevail against corporate elitism and the burden of overregulation.

The stock market’s impressive recovery amidst a backdrop of uncertainty, marked by a daunting trade war and escalating tensions in the Middle East, reveals the underlying strength of the American economy. After a near 20% decline in April, the S&P 500 has surged to new heights, reflecting a growth of 5.3% year to date. This resilience calls for a reaffirmation of traditional values regarding hard work and self-reliance, rather than reliance on government handouts.

AQR’s alternative Helix strategy further underscores their adeptness amid economic fluctuations, returning 7.4% this year alone. This success is no accident; it is rooted in a commitment to value and momentum strategies honed during Asness’s time at the University of Chicago’s Ph.D. program, and later refined at Goldman Sachs.

The firm’s evolution into multistrategy approaches over recent years, amassing $142 billion in assets under management—up from approximately $99 billion at the start of 2024—stands as a testament to the power of free enterprise unshackled from excessive regulations. AQR’s ability to navigate market challenges without resorting to government assistance exemplifies the best of American ingenuity.

Yet, despite these achievements, AQR has opted to remain silent on their performance. This lack of commentary should serve as a reminder that real success speaks volumes without the need for fanfare.
