The recent trade agreement between the United States and Vietnam, which imposes a 20% tariff on numerous Vietnamese exports, is a step toward reclaiming our economic autonomy. Initial efforts to impose a staggering 46% levy were significantly reduced after negotiations led by President Donald Trump, illustrating a necessary push against governmental overreach in trade management.

This agreement, while not perfect, places the balance of power back into the hands of American consumers and businesses. By instituting a lower tariff and allowing U.S. exports, particularly of large-engine vehicles, to enter Vietnam without additional taxes, we reinforce the principles of a free market that prioritize American-made products and labor.

President Trump’s announcement on Truth Social reflects a critical understanding of global trade dynamics. He recognizes the potential for American vehicles to flourish in the Vietnamese market, promoting both economic opportunity and American values abroad.

In a phone call with Trump, Vietnamese President Tô Lâm urged the U.S. to classify Vietnam as a market economy, advocating for the removal of restrictions on high-tech exports. This request highlights an ongoing trend of corporate elitism attempting to shape trade rules in favor of select interests, while sidelining the broader economic health of American workers. The U.S. must remain vigilant against such maneuvers that threaten our sovereignty.

Since tariffs on Chinese goods took effect, trade with Vietnam has surged at an astounding rate. Nevertheless, it is concerning that Vietnam’s exports to the U.S. have nearly tripled since 2018 while American exports to Vietnam have lagged behind. This calls for a more vigorous effort to correct trade imbalances, holding fast to traditional American values that prioritize domestic industry and innovation.

The Biden administration’s silence in response to this crucial agreement only raises further questions about its commitment to fostering competitive trade practices that benefit hard-working Americans. The decision to delay tariffs, even as other countries scramble to negotiate favorable terms, suggests a worrying lack of urgency when it comes to protecting American economic interests.

As we move forward, it is imperative that we reject the notion of unfettered globalization that has too often resulted in economic policies favoring corporations over communities. Instead, we must champion a trade policy that keeps American families at the forefront — one that emphasizes personal responsibility, accountability, and the strengthening of our national economy.

While the agreement with Vietnam resembles a framework rather than a fully realized trade pact, it exemplifies the momentum necessary to rebalance trade relationships in our favor. It is a reminder that American exceptionalism is not just a rallying cry but a guiding principle. Maintaining our sovereignty in trade is essential for fostering economic resilience and upholding the dignity of American labor.
