Iowa leads nation in UFO sightings per capita, Texas ranks last: Report

Idaho tops a list of the nation’s states with the most reported sightings of unidentified flying objects per capita leading into this year’s annual UFO Awareness Day on Thursday.

Texas rounds out the rankings, meanwhile, which were calculated using state population data and statistics from the National UFO Reporting Center, or NUFORC.

Founded in 1975, the NUFORC has logged tens of thousands of supposed UFO sightings during the subsequent decades, including 3,808 within just the first six months of 2020.

Another group known as the World UFO Day Organization has for several years held the annual awareness day on July 2 “to celebrate the fact that there is more out there.”

Web company Satellite Internet determined the states with the most and least UFO sightings per capita and published its findings ahead of this year’s awareness day.

At least 164 UFO sightings have been reported this year in Iowa, or around 9.18 sightings for every 100,000 residents, making it the states with the most sightings per capita, according to the company. Montana, New Hampshire, Maine and New Mexico trailed Iowa to round out the top five, respectively.

Yet while Texas has been home to more than double the number of supposed UFO sightings in 2020 compared to Iowa — 375 as of June — that translates to only 1.29 sightings per 100,000 residents, according to Satellite’s data, making it last on the list of states with the most UFO sightings per capita. Other states low in the list include Louisiana in second-to-last place and New York, Maryland and Illinois.

Overall, the total number of UFO sightings reported to NUFORC has recently been on the rise, Satellite added. The number of sightings logged by the organization went up from 3,456 in 2018 to 6,340 in 2019, and it was already up 112% during the first three months of 2020 compared to the year before, according to its report.

Joe Biden leads Donald Trump in Arizona and Maine, close in North Carolina

Joseph R. Biden leads President Trump in Arizona and Maine, and the two candidates are running in nearly a dead heat in North Carolina, according to polling released on Friday.

Mr. Biden held a 9-point, 49% to 40% lead over Mr. Trump in Arizona and a 17-point, 55% to 38% lead over the president in Maine, according to the New York Times/Siena College poll.

In Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, which Mr. Trump carried in 2016 to win a single electoral college vote, Mr. Biden had a 2-point, 47% to 45% lead.

In North Carolina, Mr. Biden had a 1-point, 45% to 44% lead over Mr. Trump.

The president carried Arizona and North Carolina in 2016, while Hillary Clinton carried Maine by about 3 percentage points.

Democrats held an edge in the U.S. Senate races in all three states.

In Arizona, Democrat Mark Kelly held an 8-point, 50% to 42% lead over GOP Sen. Martha McSally.

In Maine, Democrat Sara Gideon led GOP Sen. Susan Collins by 5 points, 49% to 44%.

In North Carolina, Democrat Cal Cunningham led GOP Sen. Thom Tillis by 5 points, 42% to 37%.

Democrats need to pick up a net of four Senate seats to guarantee that they’ll be in the majority next year.

The surveys were taken from Sept. 11-16.

The Arizona survey of 653 likely voters had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points, the Maine survey of 663 likely voters had a margin of error of plus or minus 5.1 percentage points, and the North Carolina survey of 653 likely voters had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.3 percentage points.

Joe Biden leads Donald Trump by 3 points in North Carolina: Poll

Democratic presidential nominee Joseph R. Biden leads President Trump by 3 points in North Carolina, a battleground state Mr. Trump carried in 2016 that Democrats are hoping to flip back to their column this year, in a poll released on Thursday.

Mr. Biden held a 3-point, 46% to 43% lead over Mr. Trump, according to the USA Today/Suffolk University poll.

He’s leading Mr. Trump by about 1 point in the latest Real Clear Politics average.

In the state’s U.S. Senate race, Democrat Cal Cunningham had a 4-point, 42% to 38% lead over GOP Sen. Thom Tillis.

Mr. Cunningham stepped in it during a debate earlier this week when he said he’d be hesitant to take a coronavirus vaccine before the end of the year.

Mr. Biden said on Wednesday that he trusts science but that he doesn’t necessarily trust Mr. Trump to keep politics out of the vaccine development race.

Republicans have slammed such talk as “anti-vaxxer” rhetoric.

In North Carolina’s gubernatorial race, Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper had a 12-point, 50% to 38% lead over GOP Lt. Gov. Dan Forest.

Mr. Cooper and Mr. Trump had tangled over state coronavirus restrictions that were cramping the president’s desire for a massive, in-person Republican National Convention in Charlotte that was ultimately scrapped.

The survey of 500 likely North Carolina voters was taken from Sept. 11-14 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.
