You can tell a lie by saying something patently false. Or you can lie by omission, which can be just as dishonest.
“Fatal police shootings impervious to protests,” said The Washington Post front page headline last Tuesday. “Nearly 1,000 killed every year despite nationwide push for justice reform.”
The article feeds the narrative of excessive, racially motivated police violence by omitting a crucial factor: The incidence of crime. It leaves the impression that police routinely shoot people, especially blacks, for no apparent reason.
There is one outburst of candor, buried inside: “The overwhelming majority of people killed are armed. Nearly half of all people fatally shot by police are white. Most of these shootings draw little or no attention beyond a news story.” No kidding.
The media have ignored the 17 people killed during the recent riots, nearly all of whom are black, and downplayed the destruction of black-owned businesses. They don’t fit the racialist narrative.
They also omit the glaring fact that nearly all the recent riots as well as poverty and high-crime rates are in cities or states governed for decades by Democrats, who now stage photo ops of themselves kneeling for “change.” Like other cities, Democrat-governed Chicago has an epidemic of killings of and by young black men, not police. In 2019, Chicago recorded 493 homicides, of which only three involved police.
In 2018, blacks “made up 53 percent of homicide offenders in the U.S. and commit about 60 percent of robberies, though they are 13 percent of the population,” Heather Mac Donald wrote last week in The Wall Street Journal.
The offenders are a tiny percentage of all the black people in America, the vast majority of whom are law-abiding, God-fearing and patriotic.
During weeks of protests following the horrific death of George Floyd, many blacks have told heartfelt stories about injustices such as being stopped for no apparent reason other than being in the “wrong” neighborhood. I once asked a black friend, a brother in Christ, why he dressed so nattily all the time. He said he had to; otherwise he couldn’t walk freely in largely white areas. “You can wear whatever you want,” he said. “I don’t have that freedom.”
There’s much more, of course. Prejudice doesn’t go away overnight, and black crime fuels it. But it’s wrong and even murderous to stir up racial hatred to keep us divided and deny all the good in America.
Back to the Post’s mendacity via omission: “The number of black and unarmed people fatally shot by police has declined since 2015, but whether armed or not, black people are still shot and killed at a disproportionately higher rate than white people.”
Ignoring the racially lopsided crime stats when tallying police shootings by race is like lamenting America’s huge military buildup from 1941 to 1945 while omitting mention of World War II.
Blacks are far likelier to be crime victims, too, which is why the insane demand by Democrats to reduce police budgets or disband police departments (Minneapolis) will leave more law-abiding blacks to the tender mercies of criminals.
Meanwhile, the ruling elites’ incendiary cheerleading of the war on police is costing more lives as officers are being shot as “payback,” like the five officers executed by a sniper in Dallas in 2016 during a Black Lives Matter (BLM) protest.
The overt lie is that BLM is a “civil rights group.” No, it’s not.
Founded by three Marxist women (go ahead, check their website) and funded by far-left financiers like George Soros, BLM promotes a communist, “queer,” anti-Christian and anti-Semitic revolution to transform America. They follow to the letter Saul Alinsky’s admonition to “first rub raw the resentments of the people of the community; fan the latent hostilities …. To agitate to the point of conflict.”
No wonder the media love them.
Led by BLM, America is being subjected to a Maoist-style cultural revolution that cancels America’s history and punishes anyone not toeing BLM’s overtly racialist line. “Silence is violence,” the signs say. As Arif Hyder Ali wrote in The Wall Street Journal, “The lack of personal culpability can’t excuse inaction.” Everybody is guilty. Forever.
A partner at a “global law firm,” Mr. Ali insists that “international law” requires that American taxpayers owe trillions in reparations.
Here’s another still-active media lie: President Trump referred to Nazis and white nationalist rioters in Charlottesville, Virginia on Aug. 15, 2017, as “very fine people.”
No, he did not. Addressing reporters, Mr. Trump began this way:
“We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence. It has no place in America.”
He went on, “you have some very bad people in that group. But you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides. … You had people in that group that were there to protest the taking down of, to them, a very, very important statue and the renaming of a park from Robert E. Lee to another name.”
He added, for emphasis, “I’m not talking about the neo-Nazis and the white nationalists, because they should be condemned totally.”
For the life of them, CNN commentators and Post writers still can’t seem to find that in the transcript.

Liberal judicial advocacy group Demand Justice is calling for Democratic presidential nominee Joseph R. Biden to release a list of potential Supreme Court nominees before the November election.
Demand Justice executive director Brian Fallon told C-SPAN on Wednesday his group has spoken to Mr. Biden and his campaign about releasing a list of candidates for any vacancy that could materialize if Mr. Biden is elected president.
“The vice president has said that he’s considering it,” Mr. Fallon said on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal. “We know that he’s made a commitment to nominate the first African American woman to the bench, and we think that’s amazing. We’d love for him to go further to say some names that he’s considering.”
Demand Justice has published a list of potential nominees for a Democratic president to appoint and Mr. Fallon said his group would update the list with more names in “a couple of days.”
Liberal attention to the issue of potential Supreme Court nominees comes as President Trump is preparing to update his own list of potential candiates. White House chief of staff Mark Meadows said Tuesday the president would approve a revised shortlist in the coming days.
Mr. Trump successfully leveraged a list of potential Supreme Court nominees during the 2016 campaign to recruit skeptical conservative voters and is looking to repeat that accomplishment in 2020.
Mr. Fallon said he thinks Mr. Biden should act now to show the differences between Mr. Biden’s potential nominees and the president’s picks for the high court.

Liberal groups ask networks to stop ‘misinformation’ from GOP convention with delayed broadcast

Liberal groups are asking television network executives to implement a one-minute delay on their broadcasts of this week’s Republican National Convention in the interest of thwarting purported misinformation.
Ultraviolet, a liberal women’s group, led a coalition of liberal groups including NARAL Pro-Choice America, and EMILY’s List, to request the TV executives do not allow their networks to broadcast the GOP convention in the same manner they did for last week’s Democratic National Convention.
The liberal groups told ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN and MSNBC that the groups recognize the networks have a professional responsibility to provide equal time to adversarial political parties, but they want the networks to “actively fact check and debunk dangerous disinformation in real-time and stop it from spreading.”
“Make no mistake the Republican National Convention’s programming will be a primary source of dangerous disinformation about everything from voting rights, to racial justice and police violence, to medical disinformation and dangerous medical falsehoods about the pandemic,” the liberal groups wrote. “It is likely that this information will also include racist and sexist attacks designed to stoke division and hatred. We know this because we have seen it before.”
The liberal groups wrote that implementing a 1-minute delay would allow for the networks to “prevent the American people from being lied to,” and the groups argue that the future of the country is at stake.
“This cheap stunt from the radical left won’t stop the American people from hearing this truth: Joe Biden and Kamala Harris advocate for a far-left agenda while President Trump and Vice President Pence will always defend our freedoms and rebuild our economy back to historic levels of growth,” said Steve Guest, Republican National Committee spokesperson, in an email.
The television network executives have not made any such public commitment to tailor their broadcasting plans to meet activists’ desires.

Liberal media blurs costs and destruction of ongoing Black Lives Matter/Antifa race riots
ANALYSIS/OPINION: The Chinese Communist coronavirus isn’t the only epidemic in the land. The Chinese Communist coronavirus isn’t the only epidemic in the land.
America’s news media are suffering mass amnesia, stuffing down a memory hole the extent of destruction from the ongoing Black Lives Matter/Antifa race riots.
Apart from lots of happy stories depicting the whole country kneeling to the BLM’s anti-White, Marxist demands, you won’t see much about the real costs.
It’s gotten so bad that Rep. Jim Jordan, Ohio Republican, unleashed an eight-minute video during a House committee meeting that was grilling Attorney General William Barr last Tuesday.
The video begins with a mashup of a dozen or so reporters and politicians repeating the phrase “peaceful protests” or “peaceful protesters” followed by riot footage. The next portion features the widow of slain St. Louis retired police Capt. David Dorn, a father of five who was killed while responding to an alarm at a pawnshop. As she speaks, scenes of mob violence unfold.
The effect is devastating. Which is why the video has come under attack. CNN’s Jake Tapper drew some blood, showing that two CNN reporters who use the phrase “peaceful protests” are taken out of context. He’s right. Both reporters note that while the daytime protests they were covering were peaceful, they were followed by nighttime violence. That part was omitted. Welcome to what happens to conservatives when they’re interviewed by Mr. Tapper’s network.
But two wrongs don’t make a right, and we’ll give you this one, Jake. You had the guts to report how similar editing created the colossal lie that President Trump praised White supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia, even though he unequivocally condemned them.
However, Mr. Tapper does not dent the Jordan video’s powerful message. Extreme media bias pervades riot coverage and political stories. Just Google “Trump.” The media are really good at covering up what they don’t want known. They’ve sugar-coated abortion for decades while serving up the party line about “choice.” They’ve played down horrific Black-on-Black urban violence, focusing instead on a handful of police brutality cases. They’re doing the same with the current riots.
“If it bleeds, it leads” isn’t in force now. If Americans actually saw the extent of lawlessness in Democrat-run cities, they might realize who’s responsible.
Given the Democrats’ wink and a nod to the rioters while defunding police, it’s not a reach to describe BLM/Antifa as the militant wing of the Democratic Party. Those are not Young Republicans out smashing windows, looting stores, burning buildings, beating up people and overturning police cars.
I’ve searched in vain for news about the riots’ overall cost. The media seem profoundly incurious. How many people have been killed? How many police officers have been injured or died? How many businesses have been destroyed? How much will it cost to fix everything that’s been broken?
There’s anecdotal evidence. Between May 25 and June 8, at least 17 people were killed in what the media call “unrest.” More than 700 law enforcers were injured by early June.
Property damage has run into the billions, and we’re not done yet. Portland continues to simmer, and cities explode nightly, like Richmond this past week.
Looters have struck at least 250 CVS pharmacies and 350 Walgreens nationwide, according to an insurance website. Crime is out of control in several major cities, with Chicago enduring double-digit murder numbers on weekends. In Los Angeles, Democrats plan to cut the police budget by more than $100 million despite homicides rising by 250% in early June.
Since we don’t have reliable, comprehensive data, let’s go to the nation’s largest city for a snapshot.
New York Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio has cut $1 billion from the NYPD budget and disbanded the 600-member plainclothes police unit. Between June 1 and June 30, shootings increased by 130% over June 2019. Murders rose by more than 30%, burglaries increased by 118% and auto thefts rose by 52%.
As for New York’s finest — you know, the guys in blue who ran into the World Trade Center during the 9/11 attacks, most of whom never came out — here are some of their costs.
Since May 28, “a total of 458 officers of all ranks have been injured,” according to spokeswoman Sgt. Mary Frances O’Donnell. “Seven officers were admitted to the hospital, 303 were treated and released from the hospital, five were treated by EMS and 150 refused medical attention. Forty-seven officers remain out sick due to their injuries.”
From May 28 to July 22, “303 NYPD vehicles have been vandalized during the protests,” she reported in an email, adding that, “14 vehicles were a total loss due to arson and condemned.”
The damage — so far — is estimated at just under $1 billion ($996,700). That’s just for the department.
“The NYPD has seen a surge in the number of officers filing for retirement,” said Sgt. O’Donnell.
Well, why not? When you work for a mayor who hates your guts and the media treat you as the bad guys, why risk your life?
As for the rest of us, just because the media have amnesia, we shouldn’t forget the real costs of the Democrats’ experiment in street justice.
Or the ongoing sacrifices of the thin blue line.
